Tom's Letter

The BIG Differences between High School and College

  1. More independence and all that free time

In college, you spend only about 15 hours a week in the classroom. Compare that to about 35 hours a week in the high school classroom. WOW! What are you going to do with all that “free” time? You know what? You’re the one who decides. You’re in charge of yourself. If you think that fewer classroom hours means less study time, think again. It really means you have to do more of your own work – on your own time. (Click to read more!)

  2. Living away from home – being your own boss

my scheduleThat’s right: in college, you’re your own boss. GREAT. Yes and no. Who tells you that you don’t have time to go to a movie Tuesday night because you need to read two chapters of history? No one. Who tells you that you shouldn’t stay up too late talking to friends because you have a quiz in your 8:00 class tomorrow? No one. Who tells you that you can’t hang around the gym too long because you’ve got to start thinking about a topic for a paper? No one. Who gets you out of bed for an early class? No one.

It’s easy to max out on fun because there’s no one to tell you that you’re spending too much time on fun things, like talking on the phone or playing video games – and not spending enough time on things that have to get done. So the big question is how can you be your own boss but still have fun? Are You Really Ready For College? helps you figure all that out.

Being your own boss also means that no one fixes your problems. You do. From small things like meeting your friends for lunch on time to large things like signing up for classes on time, you are in charge.

  • Lose your student ID? What do you do?
  • Not on the class list in Biology even though you signed up? Who do you see?
  • Roommate driving you crazy? Now what?
  • Not understanding a math chapter? Who can help you?

You have to learn to fix these problems and a hundred more. Don’t panic! You have many helpful people who will guide you through challenging times, but you need to know who they are, have the courage to go talk to them, and take action to fix the problem. YOU make the first move. No one does it for you.

In college, your success depends on you. You don’t travel around in big groups anymore, like high school. Everyone goes their own way. It’s up to you to keep track of your days, get to class, get your work done, get involved in campus activities and clubs, and have time for fun. How do you do it? Are Are You Really Ready For College? shows you how. I used its methods. I graduated with honors in four years with a 3.955 grade point average. My days were full. I got the grades, and I had a great time.
