Tom's Letter

The BIG Differences between High School and College

  1. More independence and all that free time

In college, you spend only about 15 hours a week in the classroom. Compare that to about 35 hours a week in the high school classroom. WOW! What are you going to do with all that “free” time? You know what? You’re the one who decides. You’re in charge of yourself. If you think that fewer classroom hours means less study time, think again. It really means you have to do more of your own work – on your own time.

  2. Living away from home – being your own boss

That’s right: in college, you’re your own boss. GREAT. Yes and no. Who tells you that you don’t have time to go to a movie Tuesday night because you need to read two chapters of history? No one. Who tells you that you shouldn’t stay up too late talking to friends because you have a quiz in your 8:00 class tomorrow? No one. Who tells you that you can’t hang around the gym too long because you’ve got to start thinking about a topic for a paper? No one. Who gets you out of bed for an early class? No one.
